The Grand Duke of Domburronshir Theory

Domburronshir?

This theory provides an obvious reason for the secrecy of Collan’s name and ancestry. Anniyas and others wanted every last descendant of the Grand Duke dead.

A.       References to the Grand Duchess of Domburronshir

  • Description of Veller’s battle flags MT p 386
  • Once, long ago, the self-styled Grand Duchess Veller Ganfallin had done a frighteningly good job of conquering a large swath of Lenfell; more recently, somebody calling himself her descendant had attempted the same. Anniyas had led the battle against his forces and personally killed him… The people’s gratitude had been expressed shortly after the putative Grand Duke’s death, by declaring Anniyas First Councillor. MT p16
  • Veller Ganfallin, Grand Duchess, born in 721, was poisoned in 779. She was supported by renegades of both Malerris and Mages. RoA P669 All of her children were put to death, but the youngest son, a baby, escaped. MT p 386.
  • The Census archives produced a direct line to Ganfallin's youngest son, who was only a baby when his mother died and somehow escaped the carnage at their fortress in the EndlessMountains. (MT PB p386,) This baby is the ancestor to the Grand Duke, and also the ancestor to Vellerin Domburr’s husband, Stene.
  • Lovers Captal Caitirin Bekke and Third Lord of Malerris, Shen Escover were contemporaries of Grand Duchess Veller Ganfallin. They were hatching a plot against her when the First Lord…found out about them and executed Shen Escover. RoA p 217
  • Would you have us all return to the good old days [Vellerin Dombur] wants to bring back, when her ancestor had all rivals in the Dombur Family killed because she suspected them of disloyalty? Cailet to Sarra. MT p515

B.       References to the Grand Duke of Domburronshir

MT p16

  • In the late 930’s (Collan was born in 938) a purported descendant of Veller Ganfallin attempted to emulate her conquests; he was defeated and killed at the Battle of Domburron. RoA p 670
  • Lenfell’s only major military action this century was the Battle of Domburron in 939. It had brought to heel His Exalted Grace the Grand Duke of Domburronshir, Heir to Grand Duchess Veller Ganfallin, Ruler of The Diamond Marches…. RoA PB p75, HB p62.
  • When Anniyas led the guard against that moronic Grand Duke of Domburronshir years ago, it was all arranged beforehand—to give her a great enough name and great enough power to do what she’s done since—become First Councillor—RoA p199
  • The Grand Duke was killed by Anniyas’ magic. RoA p581
  • Besides, one of Scraller’s own books had Avira Anniyas winning the Battle of Domburron and killing Warrior Mage Lirsa Bekke with her own hands, and everyone knew the two events had occurred on the same day a thousand miles apart.
  • Lirsa Bekke (renegade Warrior Mage) was working for the Grand Duke. Because discipline was the responsibility of the First Sword, Gorynel Desse ordered Auvry Feiran (who was barely 30) to take Anniyas to Bekke through a ladder (from Domburron to Domburr Castle) so she could defeat her, the same day Anniyas’s army was defeating the duke’s army. RoA p 227
  • …the death of the last notable opponent of the First Councillor’s power… created the opportunity for Scraller to be given complete control over all of the economic activities of the Waste. RoA p 8 This person died the same year Collan was born.  My suspicion is this referred to the Grand Duke of Domburronshir. But how would the Grand Duke’s death create an opportunity in the Waste? Perhaps this refers to Solla Vekke or Mittrian Solingirt.
  • Due to the above circumstances, it can be assumed that both Gorsha and Auvry were at Domburron that day.

“All the children died or were executed… Do you mean one of them survived? Is there evidence for that woman’s descent from Veller Ganfallin?” ….
“Veller Ganfallin didn’t live so terribly long ago that what she did and how she lived has no relevance to today’s Lenfell. When our Would-be Grand Duchess of Domburronshir has adequate documentation, she’ll let someone publish the news that she’s a direct descendant. It’s been tried before to rather telling effect….”
“Anniyas was elevated to First Councillor because of that other putative Ganfallin. Her victory over him was engineered by the Malerrisi…. The last claimant was a man remember. He was an upstart not only because of his ambitions but… because of his sex.” MT p310-311

Conclusion:

I have wondered for years if the Duke was somehow connected to Collan. Collan was an infant when the Duke was killed. If you take the beginning of Ruins of Ambrai literally, the timing might appear significant.
